Electronic Control for Truck-Mounted Concrete Pumps: How CIFA Smartronic Works

Back

Truck-mounted concrete pumps require control systems that can increase safety, precision, and productivity without making the operator’s job more complicated.

Electronic control is now an operational requirement, not an accessory. It has to keep production running in tight spaces, around fixed or moving obstacles and under tight pouring schedules.

Over time, construction sites have become more complex. Urban pours, proximity to buildings and power lines, large areas that must be covered continuously, and repetitive cycles in which even small positioning errors lead to frequent corrections.

In response to this evolution, electronic control platforms have been developed to support the operator, making the machine easier and more productive to use.

CIFA responds to this scenario with Smartronic®, the software developed to manage all the functions of the truck-mounted concrete pump in an integrated way and monitor all operating parameters.

How Smartronic Works in Practice

For those who use a truck-mounted concrete pump every day, Smartronic® is the machine’s control center. It manages stabilization, boom opening and closing, pumping, and diagnostics through a single electronic system that coordinates the different functions throughout every operating phase.

By automating numerous operations, the system reduces manual intervention, limits the margin for error, and speeds up the transition from setup to pouring.

It is available across the entire CIFA truck-mounted concrete pump range, with different levels of functionality depending on the model configuration.

The functions fall into four areas: stabilization, positioning, boom control during pumping, and fuel efficiency.

Smartronic 1

Stabilization, boom positioning, and boom safety

ASC (Advanced Stability Control)

Monitors stability with partially extended outriggers and intervenes before conditions become critical.

ASC 2.0

Builds on Advanced Stability Control. With partially extended outriggers, it unlocks working configurations that were previously unavailable, applying the same safety criteria while enlarging the machine's operating area.

Max Boom Extension (MBE)

Shows the maximum boom reach before unfolding, eliminating trial and error and repositioning.

Automatic Unfolding and Folding

Simplifies setup from the remote control.

Boom control during pumping

ABC (Antibouncing System)

Acts during boom movements, continuously monitoring boom behavior and dampening oscillations by up to 25%. This reduces stress on hydraulic components and improves safety for the operator and site personnel.

Boom Locking

Lets you lock two or more consecutive boom sections. The remaining sections stay still, which reduces accidental movement in confined spaces, sway in windy conditions and unintended drift during repeated pours from the same position.

Virtual Span

Creates a virtual cage by setting minimum and maximum heights for boom movement. Angle sensors on the boom allow the system to avoid overhead obstacles, reducing the need for constant manual checks.

Angle fence

Limits turret slewing. The operator sets the working sector and the system stops the boom from crossing the limit, which is useful near buildings, fences or other lateral obstacles.

Constant Height

Lets you move the boom with the joystick while the end hose stays at a constant height above the ground. This is especially useful when pouring slabs or long surfaces, where uniform height gives more even concrete placement and fewer manual corrections.

Smartronic 2

Efficiency

Auto RPM

Optimizes engine speed during stabilization, boom movement and pumping to reduce fuel consumption.

Ramp Management

Controls the speed of the pumping unit cylinders, with three preconfigured strategies for demanding working conditions. Operation monitoring and detailed error messages help identify problems early and prevent machine downtime.

The operator interface: remote control with display

The remote control with display gives the operator real-time access to:

  • Pumping pressure
  • Flow rate
  • Boom angle
  • Active safety limits
  • Alerts and any anomalies

It is not just a monitoring tool. It is also the interface through which advanced functions such as Virtual Span, Angle Fence, Boom Locking, and Constant Height are managed, with a layout designed to remain clear and intuitive even in the most demanding working conditions.

The benefits in day-to-day work

Overall, these functions help operators:

  • Manage the machine from a single system
  • Reduce operating errors
  • Speed up setup
  • Improve control and continuity of work

They also shorten machine setup time and keep work moving, even on sites with limited space.

Smartronic, Smartronic Plus, Smartronic Pro: The Differences

Version Objective
Smartronic ntegrated electronic management of the base machine
Smartronic Plus Advanced operating functions (ASC / MBE, Auto RPM, Ramp Management)
Smartronic Pro More support on complex job sites

Each step in the platform's evolution leaves its philosophy unchanged. Every upgrade adds operating capability while keeping an interface the operator already knows.

What Smartronic Pro Adds

Smartronic Pro is a further evolution of the existing platform. It keeps all Smartronic Plus functionality and adds new solutions for the most common challenges on modern job sites.

The logic stays the same: assist the operator in the most demanding situations while leaving the operator in control of the machine.

The new features solve specific problems:

Function Problem Solved
Virtual Span Overhead obstacles
Angle Fence Lateral obstacles and restricted work areas
Boom Locking Tighter boom control during pumping
Constant Height Constant end hose height during pouring
ASC 2.0 Larger operating area with partially extended outriggers
Antibouncing System Reduced boom oscillation
Remote control with display  Immediate access to advanced functions

Owners of a truck-mounted pump already equipped with Smartronic can also upgrade to Smartronic Pro, depending on machine model compatibility.

Why Smartronic Pro Suits Complex Job Sites

Virtual Span and Angle Fence define a three-dimensional working envelope in which the boom operates with greater precision and control, reducing collision risk and corrections during pumping.

Boom Locking and Constant Height go beyond the setup phase, supporting the operator throughout the pumping cycle with a more stable boom and more uniform pouring.

ASC 2.0 and the Antibouncing System build on technologies already on the platform, extending the operating area and reducing boom oscillation.

Together, these functions solve real problems on the most complex job sites while keeping the operator in control of the machine.

FAQ

  • Is Smartronic® available on all CIFA truck-mounted pumps?

Yes. Every CIFA truck-mounted pump with a closed-circuit pumping unit can be equipped with Smartronic® in the Smartronic, Smartronic Plus or Smartronic Pro versions. Smartronic Pro is also available as an upgrade.
  • What is the main difference between base Smartronic® and Smartronic Pro?

Smartronic® includes the main machine control functions. Smartronic Pro includes everything in Smartronic Plus and adds Virtual Span, Angle Fence, Boom Locking and Constant Height. It also builds on existing technologies such as ASC 2.0 and the Antibouncing System.
  • Are Virtual Span and Angle Fence only useful on complex job sites?

No. They are ideal where obstacles are present, but they improve precision and safety on any site where the boom's working space needs to be defined.
  • What does it mean that the ASC system "maximizes the working area"?

With partially extended outriggers, ASC calculates the safest configuration in real time, so the machine can use the maximum available operating area.
  • Can Smartronic Pro be purchased as an upgrade for existing machines?

Yes. Smartronic Pro is available as an upgrade for compatible models. To check availability, contact a CIFA dealer.
